Langenmantel, Matthäus

1485-1551. Germany. Matthäus Langenmantel was an Augsburg patrician, from one of the oldest local families. He served as a  town councillor and captain (Hauptmann) of the town's military. Roth has identified him as the potential author of the town chronicle transmitted anonymously in Augsburg, SB & StB, 2° Cod. Aug. 51. The chronicle was probably written after he was expelled from his official duties by Charles V in 1548 because of his adherence to Protestantism, but the vast material he uses was certainly assembled in the preceding decades, when he had access to the city archive.
