1493-1570. Switzerland. François Bonivard was born in Seyssel in 1493 as the son of a noble Sabaudian family. He studied grammar in Pinerolo, then law under Claude de Seyssel in Turin and under Ulrich Zasius in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1514, he became prior of the Cluniac priory of Saint-Victor in the suburbs of Geneva but in 1519, he was constrained to renounce it due to his hostility to the duke of Savoy.
