City in Lucania on a hilly ridge (663 m high) in the valley of the Tanager, modern Buccino (in the province of Salerno). Subjugated in 209 BC by the Romans (Liv. 27,15,2), at first a municipium of the tribus Pomptina, then a praefectura (Liber coloniarum 1,209). The Numestrani (Plin. HN. 3,61; Numistro) and the pagi Forensis and Naranus (Nares Lucanae, modern Lo Scorzo) were assigned to it (CIL X 407).
