Born Frankfurt an der Oder 31. 12. 1868, died Dettelbach am Main 21. 10. 1944. 1881–1888 Landesschule in Schulpforta; from 1888 studied classical philology, history and classical archaeology at Göttingen and Munich. 1892 doctorate at Univ. of Göttingen. 1900–1919 senior teacher at Wilhelm-Gymnasium Hamburg; 1919–1936 prof. of ancient history at Univ. of Hamburg.
