British private scholar and politician. Born Riverstown Castle (near Dublin) 1716 or 1717, died Putney (London) 9. 9. 1771. 1730–1732 (?) at Univ. of Glasgow; 1738 at Univ. of Padua. Thereafter various tours of the Mediterranean and Europe. 1756–1763 and 1768–1770 Under-Secretary of State. From 1761 Member of Parliament.
