Matriculation at Univ. of Göttingen 1777; from 1779 teaching at Ilfeld and rector at Osterode. 1783 appointed to Halle as prof. ord. in philosophy and pedagogics; 1784 made prof. eloquentiae et poeseos at his own request. Closure of Univ. of Halle 1806, moved to Berlin. 1809/10 involved in the foundation of Berlin Univ., but refused a professorship.
