Studied classical philology from 1876 at Breslau; 1880 doctorate there. 1881 studied archaeology at Munich. 1882 habil. (history of religion) at Breslau. 1883–1886 priv.-doz. there. 1886–1890 prof. ext., 1890–1895 prof. ord. at Marburg; 1895–1924 prof. ord. in Latin studies at Halle; 1908/09 rector of the univ.
