Studied Oriental languages and ancient history from 1880 at Leipzig with Eduard Meyer, from spring 1882 ancient history at Tübingen with Alfred von Gutschmid, from autumn 1882 at Berlin with Theodor Mommsen. 1885 doctorate at Berlin, then working in the Egyptian Department of the Königliches Museum in Berlin. 1888 habil.
