Born Sheffield 26. 2. 1911, died Inverness 20. 4. 1983. 1930–1937 studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, teachers including Gilbert Murray, Henry Michael Denne Parker, Harold Idris Bell and Hugh Last, who in 1934 directed his attention towards papyri. From 1936, assistant in humanities, 1938 lecturer in classics at King’s College in Aberdeen.
