Austrian ancient historian. Born Jaworzno (near Kattowitz), then in Austrian Galicia, 19. 9. 1891, died Fribourg (Switzerland) 25. 2. 1945. Private tuition, then 1910 Reifeprüfung in Vienna. From 1910, studied Greek and Roman history and classical philology in Vienna. 1914 doctorate supervised by Mommsen’s and Hirschfeld’s student Ludo Moritz Hartmann on Ravenna in Late Antiquity. 1915–1917 war service.
