English historian and man of letters. Born Kingsclere (Hampshire) 28. 4. 1699, died Byfleet (Surrey) 20. 8. 1768. 1716–1720 attended Winchester College; from 1720 scholar, from 1722 fellow of New College, Oxford. BA 1724; MA 1727. 1728–1738 prof. of poetry at Oxford; 1731–1741 tours of Europe. Member of the Society of Dilettanti by 1736 at the latest. From 1741 Regius Prof. of Modern History at Oxford.
