Born Hildesheim 18. 6. 1896, died Hamburg 31. 10. 1986. 1914 Abitur at Gymnasium Johanneum in Lüneburg; 1918–1922/23 studied (mostly classical philology) at Leiden, Göttingen, Berlin and Munich. 1922 doctorate at Göttingen; 1925 habil. at Hamburg. From 1931 prof. ord. in classical philology at Hamburg. Retired 1960.

Career and works

S. began studying law and economics at Edinburgh shortly before the outbreak of World War I, and was interned in Britain when hostilities began.…
