French archaeologist and numismatist. Born Hericourt 10. 11. 1895, died Neuchâtel 21. 1. 1973. School in Mulhouse, Normandy and Oxford; fought at Verdun and Thessaloniki in World War I. Studied in Paris. 1922 assistant, then 1928 secretary-general of the École française d’Athènes; from 1929 Directeur-général des Antiquités de Syrie et du Liban at Beirut. 1941–1945 exile in Mexico and Washington as representative of General De Gaulle.
