German prehistorian and archaeologist of the Roman provinces. Born Hannover 6. 8. 1859, died Arolsen (Hessen) 7. 12. 1943. Father of the archaeologist Walter-Herwig Schuchhardt. Studied classical archaeology and philology at Leipzig, Göttingen and Heidelberg; doctorate Heidelberg 1882, 1884–1886 private tutor in the household of Prince Bibesco in Moldavia; 1886/87 DAI travel bursary; 1888 assistant at Berliner Museen; 1888/89–1908 director of the Kestner-Museum in Hannover.
