Born Johann Ludwig Heinrich Julius S., Neubukow (Rostock), 6. 1. 1822, died Naples 26. 12. 1890. 1866/67 studied philology, literature and philosophy in Paris. 1869 doctorate at Rostock; 1883 honorary doctorate from Oxford. 1868 first excavation in the Troad. 1870–1873, 1876–1879, 1882, 1889–1890 excavations at Hissarlik, 1874 and 1876 at Mycenae, 1876 and 1884/85 at Tiryns, 1880/81 and 1886 at Orchomenus, 1883 at Thermopylae, 1888 at Alexandria.
