German writer and literary theorist. Born Karl Wilhelm Friedrich S., Hannover, 10. 9. 1772, died Dresden 11. 1. 1829. Brother of August Wilhelm Schlegel. Studied law at Göttingen 1790, studied philology and philosophy at Leipzig 1791–1794. 1794–1796 freelance writer in Dresden. 1796–1802 private scholar in Berlin and Jena (1800/01 priv.-doz. at Univ. of Jena). 1802–1804 in Paris, thereafter in Cologne, Dresden and elsewhere.
