German-Swiss classical archaeologist and philologist. Born Heilbronn 26. 1. 1905, died Basel 16. 4. 1999. Studied at Tübingen, Heidelberg and Marburg; doctorate Marburg 1930. 1932–1935 excavation at Aeolian Larisa and assistant at DAI Athens. Emigrated to Basel in 1935, habil. there 1936. Thereafter teaching; 1952–1975 prof. ord. in classical archaeology at Univ. of Basel.
