Born Carl Georg Ludwig R., Marburg, 8. 3. 1850, died Halle 17. 1. 1922. 1868–1873 studied classical philology and archaeology at Bonn and Berlin; doctorate 1873 and habil. 1876, both Berlin. 1877 prof. ext. in archaeology at Univ. of Berlin, 1880 prof. ord. there. From 1890, prof. ord. in classical archaeology and philology at Univ. of Halle; rector there 1906/07; retired 1920. 1882–1921 co-editor of the periodical Hermes.
