Belgian classical philologist and ancient historian. Born Liège 21. 12. 1904, died Ixelles (Brussels) 28. 3. 1979. Grew up in Brussels (on biography ); initially trained as a teacher at the École Normale Émile André there; then studied classical philology at the Univ. Libre de Bruxelles (ULB); 1927 doctorate and 1939 Agrégation de l’enseignement supérieur there, for a thesis on the economy of Ptolemaic Egypt . From 1944, prof. ord. at ULB; many academic offices and honours.
