Born John Enoch Powell, Birmingham, 16. 6. 1912, died London 8. 2. 1998. 1930–1933 read classical philology at Trinity College, Cambridge; 1934–1937 fellow there. 1938–1939 prof. of Greek at Univ. of Sydney. 1939–1945 war service in the British army. 1950–1987 Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons. 1960–1963 Secretary of State for Health. Sacked from the Shadow Cabinet 1968 because of his views on New Commonwealth immigration.
