German ancient historian. Born Nuremberg 31. 10. 1852, died Munich 27. 9. 1914. School in Nuremberg. Studied history, classical philology and economics at Munich, Göttingen and Leipzig. 1875 doctorate in medieval history at Göttingen; 1879 habil. in ancient history at Erlangen. From 1884 prof. of ancient history at Erlangen, from 1901 at Munich. Ennobled 1909 (‘von P.’).
