German classical philologist. Born Hänchen (Cottbus) 30. 7. 1872, died Göttingen 5. 1. 1962. Studied classical philology at Erlangen, Berlin and Göttingen; 1895 Staatsexamen (teaching certificate). Schoolteacher in Berlin from 1897; doctorate there 1898. 1906 prof. ext. in Göttingen; 1909 personal prof. ext. in Göttingen; 1916 prof. ord. in classical philology at Göttingen. 1937 retirement, though he returned to teaching at the institute in the course of its post-war reconstruction, from 1947 into the 1950s.
