German-French jurist and ancient historian. Born Berlin 3. 6. 1902, died Linz 26. 12. 1979. Studied law at Breslau and Heidelberg; 1925 doctorate of law at Breslau. 1929–1933 studied ancient history and classical philology at Berlin. Emigrated 1933; 1933–1937 studied ancient history at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1956, academic director of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique in Paris; from 1961 also of the École pratique des hautes études in Paris.
