British Egyptologist and archaeologist. Born William Matthew Flinders P., Charlton (London), 3. 6. 1853, died Jerusalem 28. 7. 1942. Active from 1880/82 as an excavator in Egypt. 1893–1933 Edwards Chair of Egyptology at Univ. College, London. From 1926, excavating mainly in Palestine. Excavations at over 60 sites in Egypt and Palestine.
