German ancient historian. Born Leipzig 21. 5. 1884, died Bonn 15. 1. 1975. School, then studies of classical philology, modern history and economics at Leipzig. 1911 doctorate on Egyptian administrative liturgy, then assistant to Karl Julius Beloch. Served in World War I, then from 1918 assistant to Johannes Kromayer at Leipzig, 1920 habil there. 1922–1929 prof. ord. in ancient history at Univ. of Graz.
