German gem cutter and medal maker. Born Biberach 21. 3. 1705, died St. Petersburg 27. 10. 1763. Probably attended school in Ulm; 1718–1724 trained as goldsmith in Biberach. Tour of Europe: learned the art of gem-cutting from Johannes Hug in Bern, then stayed at Venice (1730) and Florence (1732), where he was in the service of the Medici until 1735; attended Roman art academy of San Luca.
