French political theorist and philosopher. Born 18. 1. 1689 at the Château La Brède near Bordeaux, died Paris 10. 2. 1755. Studied law at Bordeaux from 1705; from 1714 official at the Parlement de Guyenne. After marrying a Huguenot in 1716, became heir to his uncle. From 1716 member of the Académie of Bordeaux. 1726 moved to Paris; 1727 elected to Académie française.
