Italian historian. Born 5. 9. 1908 in Caraglio (Piedmont), died London 1. 9. 1987. Studied at Turin and Rome from 1925; from 1932 prof. of Greek history at Rome, 1938 prof. of Roman history at Turin. Emigrated to Britain 1939; 1947 lecturer at Bristol. 1951–1975 prof. of ancient history at Univ. College, London. Personal professorship at Turin 1945–1964 and from 1964 at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. Regular guest prof. at Univ. of Chicago from 1975.
