Swiss painter and art critic. Born Stäfa (Lake Zurich) 16. 3. 1760, died Weimar 14. 10. 1832. School and artistic training at Stäfa and Zurich. 1784–1790 in Italy, teaching drawing among other things. From 1791 staying with Goethe at Weimar. From 1795 prof. at Freies Zeicheninstitut in Weimar, becoming its director and appointed Hofrat (‘court councillor’) in 1807.

At the studio of Johann Caspar Füssli in Zurich, M. came into contact with the ideas of Neoclassicism through Johann Caspar …
