Swiss classical philologist and scholar of religion. Born Märstetten (canton of Thurgau) 16. 9. 1891, died Basel 1. 5. 1968. 1911 studied classical philology at Munich, from 1912 in Basel. Doctorate Basel 1920, habil. there 1926. 1919–1957 teacher at Humanistisches Gym-nasium in Basel, also lecturer at Univ. of Basel. From 1926 priv.-doz., from 1933 prof. ext., from 1942 prof. ord. in classical philology there.
