Studied classical archaeology, ancient history, classical philology and art history: 1911–1914 in Bonn and Berlin, 1919–1922 in Leipzig; doctorate Leipzig 1922. 1923/24 DAI travel bursary; 1924/25 assistant at DAI Athens section; 1926–1935 curator of antiquities dept. at Berliner Museen; 1935–1945 director of Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier.
