French archaeologist, Egyptologist and numismatist. Born Paris 1. 6. 1802, died Athens 22. 11. 1859. After classical studies, became junior inspector of the royal art collection in 1825. 1824–1826 travelled to Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands. 1828 took part in the Egypt expedition of Champollion, then in 1829 in the French expedition to the Morea. In 1830, became head of the dept. of Beaux Arts at the Ministry of Education, then conservator at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, and from 1832 at the Bibliothèque national…
