Doctorate 1896, habil. 1902, Bonn. 1902 priv.-doz. at Univ. of Bonn. 1905 second secretary of DAI at Athens, succeeding Wilhelm Dörpfeld as director of excavations 1912. 1920 prof. ord. at Halle; 1930–1936 first secretary at Athens. Emigrated to USA 1939. 1939–1952 teaching at American univs. Returned to Germany 1952.
