In American captivity 1945/46. 1946–1954, priv.-doz. in Munich; 1954–1962 prof. ord. in classical philology at Freie Univ. Berlin. 1962–1970 at the Univ. of Heidelberg; 1970–1982 at Univ. of Munich (successor to Kurt von Fritz). 1978–1990 president of the Hölderlin-Gesellschaft.
