German polyhistorian and especially legal scholar. Born Norden (East Friesland) 9. 11. 1606, died Helmstedt 12. 12. 1681. From 1620, studied philosophy, philology, history, theology and medicine at Helmstedt and, from 1625, at Leiden. 1632 prof. of natural philosophy at Helmstedt, 1636 doctorate of medicine and philosophy, 1637 prof. ord. in medicine there, also in politics from 1650; dean and rector on several occasions.
