Born Paris 10. 10. 1852, died there 27. 3. 1937. 1873–1876 École normale supérieure (Agrégé de grammaire); 1880 Thèse du doctorat in Paris. 1887 appointed to Collège de France, where he taught Roman epigraphy for 45 years; 1895 elected to Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres; 1916–1937 Secrétaire perpétuel of the same body.
