School at Insterburg; studied history and philosophy at Königsberg; doctorate there 1875, diss. on epistemology and metaphysics in Spinoza; 1878 habil. in ancient history at Univ. of Königsberg. From 1879 prof. ext., from 1881 prof. ord. at Univ. of Kiel; 1897 appointed to Univ. of Göttingen.
