School in Nuremberg. 1905 studied classical archaeology and history at Munich; doctorate there 1912. 1919 prof. ext. at Erlangen; 1920 prof. ord. at Freiburg; 1922–1929 First Director of DAI Athens; 1929–1954 prof. ord. at Munich. Suspended 1946/47. Teaching work until 1959.
