Irish ancient historian. Born Monaghan (Ireland) 16. 9. 1861, died Rome 1. 6. 1927. Father was a priest, his brother Robert Gregg Bury (1869–1951), a scholar of Greek philosophy. Trained at Foyle College, Londonderry, and Trinity College, Dublin, where he was Fellow from 1885. 1893 prof. of modern history and 1898 also Regius Prof. of Greek. 1902 until his death, Regius Prof. of Modern History (Cambridge), and Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge.
