German classical archaeologist. Born Gotha 19. 4. 1809, died Rome 11. 9. 1856. 1829 studied at Göttingen, from 1830 at Munich. 1832 doctorate in Leipzig; then a period at Dresden. Amanuensis of Eduard Gerhard at Königliches Museum zu Berlin from spring 1833. From autumn 1833, worked at Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica in Rome, in various positions, 1840–1856 as Director-Secretary or First Secretary.
