Friedrich-Gymnasium in Breslau; studied classical philology at Breslau, Berlin and Bonn. doctorate 1866 at Berlin, habil. 1870 at Breslau. 1875 prof. ext. of archaeology at Königsberg, prof. ord. of archaeology and classical philology at Zurich from 1877 until his death, 1888–1890 rector.
