Attended school in Greiz and Plauen; studied at Erlangen and Bonn; doctorate 1862 in Bonn; habil. 1868 in Göttingen. 1869 prof. ext. in Zürich; 1871 Hon. prof. in Munich; 1872 prof. ord. of classical archaeology at Prague; 1877 prof. ord. at Vienna; 1898 Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, also Vienna.
