Greek philosopher and philologist. Born 1393/94 or c. 1415 in Constantinople, died 26. 6. 1487 in Rome. 1438–1439 participant in the Council of Ferrara-Florence; 1441–1444 studied philosophy and took doctorate at Padua, also teaching Greek; 1448–1453 director of the Katholikón Museíon in Constantinople. After the fall of Constantinople, undertook various diplomatic missions, e.g. on behalf of the despótēs of Mistra, Thomas Palaeologus, to England.
