German classical archaeologist. Born 15. 10. 1865 in Stettin (now Szczecin), died 12. 9. 1927 in Bad Nauheim. Attended school in Stettin; 1884–1888 studied classics at Tübingen, Leipzig and Munich; 1888 doctorate at Munich; worked for two years as an actor in Munich and Berlin. 1891–1893 extensive travels in Mediterranean region; from 1895 private scholar in Rome. 1916–1921 in Berlin because of war; 1921–1927 first director of the DAI in Rome.
