A. Life and works

Antiquity provides only sparse information on the life of T. The most important sources are the prolegomena in scholia to his poems, and the lemma Theókritos in the Suda (10th cent.). Since the scholia draw on the poems of T. themselves (eidýllia = Idylls, Id.; see below, B.2.), they are of no great value in this respect.
