A. Life and work

Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus maior (b. Comum AD 23/24, d. Stabiae AD 79), ‘Pliny the Elder’ (P.), was an inexhaustibly creative figure who devoted every spare moment to his studies. He died observing the eruption of Vesuvius. All that we know of his biography comes from his own testimony, the letters of his nephew, Pliny the Younger (Plin. Ep. 3,5; 6,16; 6,20) and the fragments of a biography by Suetonius (in the section De historicis in De viris illustribus, fr. 80 Reifferscheid)…
