Controversy over the biography of Petronius, traditionally identified as Petronius Niger (Arbiter), seems to have been resolved with the general consensus that the author of the Latin Satyrica (Sat.) is identical to the mysterious P. described by the historian Tacitus in his Annales (16,18f.). Other (mostly older) scholarly views date him either to the period of Augustus (Mommsen [40]), the reign of Tiberius (Bücheier) or between AD 180 and 270 (i.a. Marmorale, Niebuhr [37]…
